Why Are You Always Hungry After Working Out?

Always hungry after working out? Exercise burns fewer calories than it feels like, and your appetite is a sneaky negotiator. Here is how to handle it.

· 3 min read

You are hungry after working out because your body noticed you moved and now wants a reward, preferably in the shape of a burger. Exercise burns fewer calories than most people think, so the post-gym feast often cancels the workout completely. The fix is protein, planning and a bit of perspective.

Read the full approach in how to calculate a calorie deficit without obsessing.

How many calories does a workout really burn?

Less than you want. Harvard Health's chart for a 185-pound person shows about 126 calories for 30 minutes of weight lifting and 159 for 30 minutes of brisk walking. A 30-minute run at 6 mph burns about 420.

Now compare that with a medium fast-food burger and fries, which can sail past 1,000. Your workout and your lunch are not on speaking terms.

You can't outrun a bad diet, but you can try, and the burger will always win.

Why does exercise make you hungrier?

Your body likes energy balance and nudges you to eat after you spend energy. Add the "I earned this" mindset and you get a very expensive recovery meal. It is normal. It is also how people train for months and the scale doesn't move.

If that is you, read working out but not losing weight and running but not losing weight.

What should you eat after a workout?

Something with protein, and not a feast. A decent plan is:

  • A normal meal with 25 to 40 grams of protein. Eggs, chicken, fish, Greek yogurt or a shake.
  • Some carbs and vegetables. Rice, potatoes, fruit.
  • Water. Thirst often pretends to be hunger.

The International Society of Sports Nutrition suggests 20 to 40 grams of protein per meal, and protein keeps you fuller than most things on your plate.

How do you stop the post-gym binge?

Plan it. The binge happens when you walk out starving with no plan.

  1. Eat a proper meal two to three hours before training.
  2. Have a post-workout meal decided in advance.
  3. Keep protein snacks in the car. Not the glovebox. We have all been there.
  4. Don't treat exercise as a coupon. You did not earn a pizza. You earned a normal dinner.

Should you eat back your workout calories?

Mostly no. Fitness watches and gym machines tend to overestimate burn. If you are trying to lose fat, keep your calorie target steady and treat any exercise as a bonus. More on this in how much protein you need to lose fat.

When is hunger a real problem?

If you feel faint, shaky or sick, or you are training hard on very little food, eat more. A small deficit works. Starving yourself does not. If hunger is extreme or constant, talk to your doctor.

The bottom line

Hunger after training is normal. The cure is protein, planning and not confusing a 30-minute walk with a license to eat a whole pizza. Follow the restart plan, keep meals boring and let results do the bragging.

Go train, FATBOY. Then eat a chicken breast.
