How to Find Time to Exercise With Young Kids

How to find time to exercise with young kids: train early, use nap time, move with your kids and accept shorter sessions. Here's how to make it work.

· 3 min read

To find time to exercise with young kids, stop looking for a spare hour and use short, fixed slots instead. Train for 20 minutes before the house wakes up, during nap time or straight after bedtime. Move with your kids on walks and at the park. Accept less volume for now. Something done consistently beats nothing.

If you want a plan to follow, start the 4-week restart plan for men over 30.

Why does it feel impossible?

It feels impossible because young kids make every day unpredictable, and broken sleep leaves you exhausted. Most plans assume an hour a day and plenty of energy. You have neither right now. The fix is a plan built for the time and energy you actually have.

Pick one fixed slot

Pick one time slot you can protect three times a week, and keep it the same. The most reliable times for parents are:

  • Early morning, before anyone else is up.
  • Nap time, on days you're home.
  • Straight after the kids' bedtime, before you sit down.
  • Lunchtime, if you work from home.

Put it in your calendar. Tell your partner. Treat it like an appointment.

Keep sessions short

Twenty minutes is enough. The US Physical Activity Guidelines say any amount of activity has health benefits, and bouts no longer need to be 10 minutes or longer to count. A short full-body dumbbell circuit, three times a week, will make you stronger.

Here are three ready-made sessions: 20-minute workouts for busy dads.

Move with your kids

Count active time with your kids. Walk to daycare, push the stroller up hills, carry the toddler, chase them around the park, ride bikes together. It adds steps every day and doesn't need a babysitter.

Trade time with your partner

If you have a partner, trade training time. You take the kids for 30 minutes so they can train, and they do the same for you. Put it in the shared calendar so it actually happens.

Have a bad-week plan

Some weeks, nothing will go to plan. Have a minimum: one 10 to 15 minute session and a family walk. Never miss two planned sessions in a row. If sleep is terrible, go lighter rather than skipping entirely. Here's how to keep going in no motivation to work out.

Your next step

You don't need more time. You need a fixed slot, a short session and a plan for bad weeks. Pick your slot today, book three 20-minute sessions this week and follow the 4-week restart plan.
