To lose weight at 40, eat slightly less than you burn, get protein at every meal, lift weights three times a week and walk daily. It is not glamorous. It is also what works. Your metabolism isn't the villain here, so stop blaming it. Blame the takeout.
If you want it all in one place, follow the 4-week restart plan for men over 30.
Why is losing weight at 40 harder?
It feels harder, but biology is not mostly to blame. Research on 6,421 people found metabolism, adjusted for body size, stays steady from 20 to 60. What changes is life: more desk time, less sleep, more stress, more drinks, fewer pickup games.
The good news is that every one of those is fixable. The bad news is that they are yours to fix, so no more blaming age. Read does metabolism slow down after 30 for the full myth-busting.
How fast should you lose weight?
About 1 to 2 pounds a week. The CDC says people who lose weight slowly and steadily are more likely to keep it off. Crash diets work for about eleven days and then you eat a whole pizza out of spite.
A small deficit beats a heroic one. Here is how to calculate a calorie deficit without obsessing.
What should you eat?
Normal food, in slightly smaller amounts, with plenty of protein. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2025 to 2030 suggest 1.2 to 1.6 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight a day. For a 90 kg man, that is roughly 108 to 144 grams.
- Protein at every meal. Eggs, chicken, fish, Greek yogurt, beans.
- Fewer liquid calories. Beer and soda count. Sorry.
- Fewer "just a bite" bites. The kids' leftovers are not a food group.

Do you need to lift weights?
Yes. Cardio burns calories, but weights help you keep muscle while you lose fat. Without lifting, more of the weight you lose can come from muscle, and you end up smaller and still soft. Three full-body sessions a week is plenty. See cardio vs weights for fat loss.
What about the scale?
The scale is a liar with good PR. It swings with water, salt and the weight of your lunch. Weigh yourself a few mornings a week and look at the weekly average, and measure your waist. Here is how to track progress without a scale.
What if the weight won't move?
Check your food honestly for a week. Most men are off by a few hundred calories a day without knowing it. If you are training hard and still stuck, read working out but not losing weight.
The bottom line
At 40, weight loss is the same recipe as always: small deficit, protein, lifting, walking and patience. The only new ingredient is not pretending you are 25. Start the restart plan and give it a month.
Go train, FATBOY.
