StrongLifts 5x5 is a simple, three-day full-body strength program that can work well for men over 30, as long as you start light and learn your form first. You alternate two workouts, do 5 sets of 5 reps on most lifts and add a little weight each session. The catch is that it needs a barbell, rack and good technique.
If you'd rather ease in first, start the 4-week restart plan for men over 30.
How does StrongLifts 5x5 work?
You train three days a week, alternating Workout A and Workout B. Both include squats, which you do every session. The official StrongLifts guide lists the lifts.
- Workout A: Squat, bench press and barbell row.
- Workout B: Squat, overhead press and deadlift.
Most lifts are 5 sets of 5 reps, and you add a small amount of weight when you complete all your reps. The deadlift is one heavy set of 5.
Is it good for men over 30?
Yes, for many men, because it's simple and builds strength with big basic lifts. The key is to start with a light weight, even the empty bar, and focus on form. Men returning after a long break should be especially patient. Slow progress that you can keep up beats rapid jumps that cause injury.
If you haven't trained in years, read how to do your first workout after a long break first.
What does a first session look like?
Start with just the empty bar, which weighs 45 pounds on a standard Olympic barbell, or lighter if that's too much. Do 5 sets of 5 squats, then your other lifts for the day. It should feel easy. That's the point: you're learning the movements and building the habit before the weights get heavy.
Rest a couple of minutes between sets. Add a small amount of weight at the next session if you completed every rep with good form. If you missed reps, repeat the same weight. Progress will slow after a few weeks, and that's normal.
What if you don't have a gym?
You don't have to use a barbell to get stronger. If you train at home, a pair of dumbbells and a simple full-body plan will get you most of the way there for the first few months. See the home workout for beginners over 30 for a plan that needs very little kit.
What should you watch out for?
Watch your form, your recovery and your back and knees. Adding weight every session gets hard after a few weeks, so be ready to slow down. Eat enough protein and get seven or more hours of sleep. If you get sharp pain, stop and get it checked.

Your next step
If you have access to a gym and like structure, StrongLifts is a solid option. Start light, film your form and be patient. If you want a gentler lead-in, use the 4-week restart plan for your first month, then move on to a program like this.
