Is It OK to Work Out Every Day?

Is it OK to work out every day? Yes, if most days are walks and easy movement. Daily hard lifting is a bad idea. Here is how to do it sensibly.

Yes, you can move every day, but you shouldn't lift hard every day. Daily walking is great. Daily heavy training, when you are new or over 30, is a great way to get sore, tired and injured. The trick is mixing hard days, easy days and rest.

Want a week that balances it all? Use the 4-week restart plan.

Can you exercise every day?

You can be active every day. The US guidelines suggest 150 to 300 minutes of moderate activity a week, which spreads nicely across seven days. A walk, a bike ride or a game with the kids all count.

What you shouldn't do is train the same hard muscles every day without recovery. Muscles grow during rest, not during the workout. Skip the rest and you skip the gains.

What should a week look like?

Three hard days, four easy ones:

  1. Monday: Strength.
  2. Tuesday: Walk.
  3. Wednesday: Strength.
  4. Thursday: Easy walk or bike.
  5. Friday: Strength.
  6. Saturday: Long walk, play, hike.
  7. Sunday: Rest, or a stroll if you can't sit still.

That is active every day without the daily beating.

What happens if you never rest?

You get tired, sore and grumpy, your lifts stall and your sleep worsens. Eventually you skip a session, then another, and you are back on the couch announcing a "fresh start Monday." Overtraining is how enthusiastic men become former gym members.

If you are already sore for days, read sore for days after working out and why recovery takes longer after 30.

Are rest days lazy?

Absolutely not. A rest day is part of the plan, like salt in a recipe. Muscle repair, joint recovery and a lower chance of injury all happen on your days off. Take them without guilt, and add a walk if you feel itchy.

What about men who train daily and look great?

They usually either split their training so different muscles get rest, have years of experience or are sponsored. You are none of these yet. Keep it simple for the first few months.

Can you do a short workout every day?

You can do a short, easy one. A ten-minute walk or mobility routine on a rest day is fine and often helps stiffness. Just keep it easy. If it feels like a workout, it is a workout.

How do you know you're overdoing it?

Warning signs: persistent soreness, poor sleep, a resting mood like a wet cat, joint pain or lifts going backwards. If you see these, take a day or two off and cut volume. Sharp or worsening pain, swelling or dark urine after exercise needs a doctor.

The bottom line

Move daily, lift three times a week and rest like it is part of the job, because it is. Start the restart plan and let the rest days do their work.

Go train, FATBOY. Then sit down.
